If you’re a mom about to give birth, you may be wondering what exactly the difference is between a drug-free and an epidural birth.
I mean, the end goal you’re aiming for is the same right? A happy, healthy baby. So, does it really matter if it’s drug-free or an epidural birth, right?
Absolutely not.
Birth is birth, no matter how you experience, but just like many aspects of parenting, the journey getting there might look a little different. As both a former labor and delivery nurse and a mom of four who’s had drug-free births and epidural births, I can tell you that there are some differences between the two. Here’s what you need to know about drug-free vs. epidural births:
One is not “easier” than the other
Having had both types of birth, you might expect me to proclaim wide and far that an epidural birth is by far the easier option. But that’s not necessarily the case and that wasn’t my experience. Some women might find an epidural to not be an effective pain relief and then be limited in their options to move around; others might find that an epidural slows their labor progress, especially if they are going through labor for the first time. Others might find that an epidural allows them to relax enough to really allow their baby to move through the birth canal. I had both positive and negative experiences with medication and with giving birth without medication, so it’s impossible to say that one is “easier” than another.
